Hybrid Flasks
The works were first created in 3D modelling software prior to their rendering using rapid prototyping technology. The flasks are slip cast using translucent Southern Ice porcelain.
Acquired for Permanent Collection of Art
A selection of the Hybrid Flasks and Cups together with the Mesa Bowls and Cups were acquired by Townsville City Council in May 2016 for its permanent collection of art. View the full catalogue of the 2016 North Queensland Ceramic Awards. My work is on pages 15 and 17. The Hybrid Flasks and Cups and Mesa Bowls and Cups were selected for exhibition as part of the Mayo Festival in May 2016. View the full catalogue of the Mayo Festival. My work is on page 31.
Southern Ice Porcelain
Unglazed Hand Polished Porcelain
The interiors of the white flasks are glazed with a transparent glaze sometimes with a hint of colour while the external surface is unglazed and the porcelain is hand polished to a soft sheen, which makes the pieces very smooth and tactile. Porcelain is an extremely strong and durable material even when the walls are 2 - 3mm thick, which reveals the translucency of this fine material.
Iridescent Crystalline Glazes
In 2017 I developed seven iridescent crystalline glazes. The glazes are challenging to photograph as the shimmering iridescent effect changes with the viewpoint and direction of light. The iridescent crystals on the golden brown ground shine all the colours of the spectrum. The crystal formation often occurs in harmony with the form with smaller crystals along the rim cascading down into larger ones down the curved walls of the work. The glaze thins as it flows down from the rim during the firing sometimes forming a sparkling golden halo on the rim.
