Flask 3 : : Ice Blue Crackle Glaze 5 x 8.5 cm
Ice Crackle Glaze
The ice crackle glaze is known by several names such as fish scale and snowflake crackle, which is an indication of its broad appeal. The glaze has a striking three dimensional quality with what appear to be scales cascading down into the depths of this transparent glaze.
First Series
Following research and testing of a number of different Ice Crackle glazes in 2013 I made the first series of works consisting of bowls and vases using a dark stoneware or white stoneware body.
Gas Reduction Firing
The dynamic reducing atmosphere of a gas kiln has imbued part of the surface of Ice Crackle Vase 1 with a rose pink hue and has turned the white ice crackle on Ice Crackle Vase 2 entirely pink. Ice Crackle Vases 3 and 4 remained white.

Black Ice : : Black Slip with White Ice Crackle Glaze
Black Ice
Black Ice (2018) is a wheel thrown lidded container made of an iron-rich stoneware with black, Southern Ice porcelain slip. The ice crackle glaze has reacted with the slip during the reduction firing to produce these various surface effects. Black Ice is 7.5cms high and 13cms wide. The same surface treatment has been applied to the Ice Crackle Inverted Vase.
